At NEI Sistema de Lectura, we seek to empower students with the foundational skills they need to become fluent, confident readers in Spanish. By providing an engaging, structured, and research-based approach to literacy, we aim to foster a lifelong love of reading in students, whether they are native Spanish speakers or learning Spanish as a second language.

What is NEI Sistema de Lectura?
 

NEI Sistema de Lectura (Nothing is Impossible) is a comprehensive, evidence-based reading program designed to develop strong literacy skills in Spanish-speaking students. Built around the unique structure of the Spanish language, the program focuses on teaching reading by syllables, which provides students with the tools they need to decode words, phrases, and sentences effectively. This approach ensures that students master reading fluency step by step, building both confidence and comprehension along the way.

Who is it For?  

NEI Sistema de Lectura is designed for:

• Native Spanish Speakers: For children learning to read in their native language, the program provides a structured path from letter recognition to fluency, helping students develop the skills they need to succeed academically.

• English Speakers Learning Spanish: For English speakers learning Spanish, the program offers an immersive, step-by-step guide to reading in Spanish, focusing on pronunciation, syllable patterns, and reading comprehension.

Our Research-Based Approach
 

The NEI Sistema de Lectura program is grounded in research that supports the effectiveness of syllable-based reading instruction. Key research influences include:

1. Indicadores Dinámicos del Éxito en la Lectura (IDEL): Developed by researchers like Baker, Cummings, and Good, IDEL provides the framework for assessing early literacy skills in Spanish. It guides teachers in making data-driven decisions based on students' progress in phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
2. The National Literacy Panel: This panel emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive, high-quality instruction for Spanish-speaking students. Our program incorporates these recommendations, ensuring students are exposed to language in a meaningful and engaging way.
3. The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL): Our culturally responsive teaching strategies are informed by research from CAL. By using culturally relevant texts and experiences, students feel more connected to their learning, which promotes engagement and retention.

How NEI Sistema de Lectura Works
 

The program is built around 21 distinct syllable patterns in the Spanish language. Students progress through each phase, starting with simple syllable combinations like consonant-vowel (CV) and vowel-consonant (VC). Each phase builds on the last, with more advanced syllable structures introduced over time, ensuring that students have a solid foundation before moving on to more complex patterns. This structure allows students to gain fluency in decoding and understanding words and sentences at their own pace.

While we are dedicated to supporting Spanish classrooms around the world, we also dream of a future where literacy flourishes beyond the classroom—reaching children in all 21 Spanish-speaking countries.

This dream began with Las Aventuras Españolas de Lito, where Lito’s journey introduced students to the cultures and people of these incredible countries. Now, our goal is to bring that adventure to life—helping establish reading programs that foster a love of learning and language for children worldwide.
